“Hopefully a Better Day...”

Day

44

9:57 AM

Okay, I’m up and moving. And I actually slept, and I feel a lot more positive today.

We’ll see where it all goes…

11:40 AM

WAT.

I’ve been trying to get in touch with companies about something simple: a pre-cut foam insert I need for the product. One company was very nice, but can’t do the required tolerances on the cutouts. One company, the guy wasn’t in today.

One company, the voicemail box I was routed to told me he would be out the week of… well, that week was over a month ago.

WAT.

I had similar experiences yesterday in the FCC certification game. Seriously, folks, why is it this hard to get someone to talk business these days? Are people just not hungry for customers?

I really don’t get it.

1:12 PM

I had lunch, and now the next round. For this round, never mind the phone. I’m going in person to see if I get anywhere. Of course, they don’t appear to have showrooms, so probably not, but… I need to get out of the house, so it’s not like it’ll be a loss.

I don’t get out often enough to begin with, so it’s a good thing.

3:22 PM

Totally worth it.

Had a very good conversation with a plastic supply place here, and I think they’ll be able to help. I need to CAD up the physical design and work with them to prototype it (though it’s probably going to cost more than the boards themselves did, but that doesn’t actually surprise me).

It’s unclear at the moment if my ultimate idea is going to be within the cost envelope, but we’ll see…

It’ll be very slick if it is.

6:04 PM

And…

That was about as far as I got.

That’s not quite true; I’ve been thinking, doing back-of-the-napkin math, considering alternatives, etc., so I haven’t been idle. Hours where you do almost nothing but think really feel wasted, though. They’re not if you’re planning and whatnot, but they feel that way.

Maybe that’s why so few people seem to actually plan these days…

In any event, I think tomorrow I’ll do the CAD on this and move toward making a case prototype happen. It’s going to be expensive, unfortunately, but we’ll see where it goes. Small quantities are always expensive. My big hurdle is figuring out if I can eliminate the foam component, which would be nice.

Especially since none of the foam suppliers would talk to me today…

For now, off to eat dinner and do something else for a while.
